Strategic Therapy

Strategic Therapy

Strategic therapy isn’t so much a specific theory with prescribed interventions and associated concepts, but a term used to describe a therapist’s level of involvement in sessions.  The strategic therapist is active, directive, and takes responsibility for directly influencing clients.

This style of therapy, mastered and promoted by Jay Haley, has the therapist initiate what happens during sessions and design a particular approach for tackling each problem.

In addition to having the therapist take more responsibility for the agenda in sessions, strategic therapy does have another hallmark feature: it theorizes that a client's symptoms result from attempts by family members to correct what they consider "problem" behavior.
